Welcome!

Life isn’t always easy. Sometimes, we need a little bit of help to work through some of life’s more challenging problems.

Everyone has hurdles to overcome at some point. Whether you struggle with anxiety, depression, or any other mental health issue, you should know that there is hope for a better tomorrow.

You might be initially hesitant to seek out help and support for personal matters, but when you do, you will feel confident that you are taking a courageous first step towards getting to a better place and being a better you.

Beacon Counseling provides a very welcoming and accommodating environment for anyone seeking self-improvement. I recently began seeing Dr. Erik Schmitt who offers a very practical and helpful approach in helping me identify and better understand methods that I am able to implement to help improve my overall well-being. He takes the time to understand specifically what your goals are with therapy and is a very calm and even-tempered personality who gives very thoughtful analysis. I highly recommend him to anyone who feels they may need assistance in devising a plan in helping reach their life goals.

About Me

Are you an adolescent or adult man struggling with self esteem, anxiety, anger, or life transitions? Or a couple that has become distant and disconnected? I would welcome an opportunity to bring a sense of hope back into your life. As a University of Georgia PhD in Counseling, I have the necessary training to work together in a collaborative relationship. An approach that focuses on developing goals and rediscovering hope, through the use of structured activities and homework assignments, will be our focus.

Erik is a licensed professional counselor who holds a PhD in Counseling from the University of Georgia. Prior to his PhD, he obtained his Masters in School Counseling from Appalachian State University. His ten years of experience in school settings, in combination with private practice, has afforded him the opportunity to gain experience working with couples/families, adolescents, and children. When working with these groups, Erik uses a Person Centered, Cognitive Behavioral approach. First, this means the client/therapist relationship is of utmost importance. He works to provide safe spaces for clients to share their stories. Through these stories he helps clients to take hands on, goal oriented, practical approaches to help identify/manage sources of concern. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy works to change people’s attitudes and behaviors by focusing on their thoughts, images, beliefs, and attitudes that are held, and how these things relate to the way a person behaves in order to deal with emotional problems. Through the use of structured activities and mindfulness exercises Erik will help the client see the personal meaning placed on things, and how it relates to our problems, behaviors, and thoughts. Specializing in issues facing primarily males (early adolescence thru mid-life) Erik’s counseling services focus on support during periods of Depression, Stress/Anxiety Mgmt., Life Transitions to include crisis/conflict, need for coaching and personal goal setting management.
